Returning to my Roots

Yesterday I traveled to Lancaster to visit my parents for the day. I stopped at my favorite Tuesday haunt "Roots Market" which, in addition to being a great farmers market also has a terrific outdoor flea market. I have a multitude of boxes from Sweden that need to be unpacked and are sitting untouched in a storage shed but I still bought a cartload of things for the shop. Look this weekend for an assortment of ironstone plates, a fabulous terrine top which can be hung on the wall for display, black and white china, and a collection of old books including some Swedish language novels (found in Lancaster!) A visit to home is not complete without a raisin sticky bun OR a visit to the tomato barn where I bought some tasty jet star tomatoes, pumpkins and gourds. The stand is a huge barn but, because kids are back in school, was unmanned so I had to drop my money in the honor box....I love that!!!

Free Ad Friday

This past Friday I got up at the ungodly hour of 4:30 AM to be part of the audience at the Jack Diamond Morning show on 107.3 FM. I listen to this station in the morning and always noticed how the people who attend the "Free for All" Friday event get to say where they work. I thought it would be a great way to get a little plug in for Klaradal....and it was! They have a game they play with the "studio" audience called agree and disagree . I was the first to participate (they pick names from a hat {actually a cut open basketball}) and I won free tickets to the Nats VS Phillies game this Sunday at RFK. BUT I also got to say "I own Klaradal the Swedish Antique and Gift shop in Olney" Hey...it was seconds of air time but it was free! We'll see if anyone heard! Peter and David are going to the game today. It's the last one the Nats will play at RFK so it's great they get to go! Thanks to Mix107.3 for a fun morning!

Glassware, and copper and Linens Oh My!

It continues to be a pleasant surprise as I open the boxes of items purchases this summer. I remember a lot of them but some, because they were "lots" I purchased at auction and packed by the auction workers (and Peter and myself) I haven't seen before.

Linens
I found a wonderful little sampler (unfortunately not dated) and signed Berta Olson...simply charming. There are numerous monogrammed sheets which still need to be laundered. They would be great for a crafter to use as a special piece in a quilt or to create a romantic pillow. There are lots of smaller lace edged doilies and clothes....come see!

Silver
I have a tremendous amount of silver plate...lots of great hotel weight forks, knives and spoons. These are great as unusual and welcome hostess gifts...who doesn't need extra utensils when entertaining? (Just remember...when giving knives always include a penny to "counteract" the belief that giving items that cut will sever ties!) I also found two fabulous sterling herring forks with a fish design etched into the silver.

Glassware
Let's coin a new phrase...The "Glass" is always greener on the other side. I say this because most of the glassware I purchased at auction is green! The previous owner had so many little green wine glasses and wonderful light green footed desert dishes. All pieces are lovely, albeit a little small. Some, used for wine in the past would be great for offering spiced pecans or small candies at each person's place setting. They will add style and history to your table and make your guests "green with envy!"

Copper
I have only brought a couple of the old antique tea kettles into the store. There are a bunch of them all reasonably priced...of course! I also have a great large two handled copper pot which, if it doesn't sell this weekend, I will fill with apples (I am going to Lancaster next week) and use as a perfect fall display.

Boxed In

I spent most of our chilly rainy Tuesday at my storage unit unpacking some boxes. It's a tedious job because all items need to be identified and then entered into the inventory and priced. The next two days I will enter the items into the computer and then Saturday will have a new supply of vintage Linens, glassware (mostly cordials), glass birds, copper and paper cuttings. Stop by!

Boxes to go before I sleep

Wow...Thanks to my wonderful, loyal customers for a fabulous "reveal" weekend. I really enjoyed all of the "fussing" over the shop and appreciate your realization of how labor intensive it all was! Today I am busy pricing the artwork that is currently in the store and tomorrow will unpack more boxes from the storage locker. I will update what is unpacked in the next few days.

Those of you who were in this weekend might have seen a small kitchen sofa with two chairs that was marked sold. It was delivered Sunday and the buyer was so disappointed to discover it was too big for the planned space so it is coming back. The selling price for the three pieces is $800. If you had been interested please stop in or e-mail me.

Grand Reveal this Saturday

I've been spending the days patching walls, hanging paintings and dusting off all of the new furniture and artwork in preparation for a re-opening this Saturday. I also had to hire some furniture repairmen to help with pieces that did not fare well in the container. I've opened about 6 of my 60 boxes...there is a lot to see and a lot to price. Some of the items were purchased at Auction and were piled up in cabinets so I am seeing many for the first time. It's like Christmas except that I am not going to re-gift but re-sell everthing. Todays boxes had wonderful handpainted clogs from 1947, an assortment of copper and glass, and some darling vintage baby prints.
