Friday and Saturday in Stockholm

Friday November 2 we arrived in Sweden. We picked up our rental and immediately drove to an Auction house. We also shopped some second hand store before having an early dinner and collapsing!

Saturday, November 3 we traveled north to one of our favorite Antique shops. It had lightly snowed the night before and the scenery en route was simply beautiful. There is something about the light in Sweden...even when there isn't much...that is breathtaking. This particular Saturday (All Souls Day?) there is a custom for everyone to go to the cemetery in the evenings to place candles on the graves of loved ones. The people we were visiting took us past a cemetery to see what it was like and we were really moved. They noted that the larger masses of candles represented the newer graves. We saw people and children of all ages entering the cemetery with candles. The next day we noticed burnt out candles on the graves and lots of pink heather plants .(Their answer to our fall mum.) Sweden, for a country that is not particularly religious, seems to have so many strong traditions that bring neighbors together whether it be this event, St. Lucia, Midsummer, or Crayfish parties, there is a great sense of community...even for American outsiders!

Off To Stockholm

Peter and I leave for Stockholm today. It is a short visit, just five days, but should prove fun AND useful. We'll be hand carrying home some new Dala Horses (white with gold...black and silver...and other fun colors) some Jobs Design Bags, Framed Swedish sayings, and Maj Fagerberg cards. We also hope to find more original art work for the shop and MORE vintage Jul (Christmas) items for our Holiday Preview on November 10.
Stockholm temperatures are a little cooler than ours AND it gets darker much earlier but they more than compensate with candles and fireplaces. It really is so Romantic in Stockholm winter. Peter and I are looking forward to this Solo getaway. I will try to blog every day we are there!
